Role Overview
The Planning Team Manager is responsible for leading and coordinating the planning function within a gas contracting environment. This role ensures effective scheduling, resource allocation, and programme management across gas installation, maintenance, and infrastructure projects.
The postholder will drive performance, compliance, and operational efficiency while managing a team of planners and coordinators to ensure contractual SLAs and KPIs are consistently achieved.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Management

Lead, mentor, and develop a team of planners/schedulers.

Set performance targets and conduct regular 1:1s and appraisals.

Manage workload distribution to optimise team efficiency.

Promote a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
Operational Planning & Scheduling

Oversee daily, weekly, and long-term planning of gas engineers and field operatives.

Ensure optimal route planning and resource allocation.

Monitor and adjust schedules to respond to emergency works and reactive maintenance.

Balance planned vs. reactive workloads to meet service level agreements.
Project & Programme Management

Develop and maintain project schedules for gas installation and infrastructure projects.

Work closely with Project Managers to align delivery programmes.

Identify risks to programme delivery and implement mitigation strategies.

Provide progress updates and reporting to senior management and clients.
Compliance & Safety

Ensure planning aligns with industry regulations and safety standards (e.g., Gas Safe, HSE requirements).

Maintain accurate records for audit and compliance purposes.

Support safe systems of work through effective scheduling practices.
Performance & Reporting

Track KPIs including productivity, first-time fix rates, response times, and utilisation.

Analyse planning data to improve operational efficiency.

Produce weekly/monthly reports for senior management.

Implement process improvements using planning software and digital tools.
Stakeholder Management

Act as key liaison between operations, engineering teams, and clients.

Attend client meetings to review programme performance.

Handle escalations relating to scheduling or resource issues.
